About Roles

A role is a group of users with common access rights to tables, entities, reports, and database functions. To establish database security, you can set up roles, and then assign users to one or more roles. You can add as many roles as your organization needs.

Note

The security features described in this section are only available if your license includes Advanced Security.

You can also assign users to entity classes to determine the entities all the users belonging to a particular role can access. If you assign a user to both a role and an entity class, the user has access rights to database components and functions set up for the user’s role, but only for the entities set up for the user’s entity class. You can assign a user to multiple user roles, but only to one entity class.

Caution!

Entity access defined for an entity class overrides entity access defined for a user role.

Example

In your organization, your accounting personnel need access to the same components and functions of your database but for different entities. To establish the appropriate database security, you assign all accounting personnel to the same user role but to different entity classes.
